Will They Return Book Cover

Book Design and Cover for “Will They Return”

This has been one of the most fun projects I’ve ever worked on. I was given complete creative freedom to do the cover and book design for a WWII historical novel called “Will They Return.” This is a terrific true story, with the names changed, of a young sergeant leading his buddies through harrowing battles in northern France and southern Germany towards the end of the war.

Since the author, Gilbert Rivera, wanted to protect the identities of the subjects of his story, I came up with the idea of displaying soldiers in silhouette in various “war–weary” poses, all with an “army drab” green background. For the title and author headlines, a stencil font came naturally, as I wanted to convey a sense of “sprayed–on” letters onto an old army crate. The result is what you see here.

If you are at all interested in World War II history, and specifically the war in Europe, go to LuLu.com and buy the book. You won’t be disappointed!

Framing By Winton Company Business Card

Framing By Winton Business Card

A recent business card design utilizing the new business identity created for Framing By Winton, with a crowning touch of silver foil highlighting the framing pieces of the card. Foil isn’t used too often on business cards these days with the advent of “all–digital” printing. But it really sets your card off from the competition, in my opinion!

Sun Gallery Newsletter

Sun Gallery Newsletter

A very colorful design 4-page newsletter for a Hayward, CA art gallery. With a name like “Sun Gallery”, it’s not hard to guess where the inspiration for this design came from!

Advertising Postcard for Sun Gallery Show

Advertising Postcard for Sun Gallery Show

This postcard advertised an art gallery showing featuring a landscape photographer and a sculptor. Since the title of the show was “Windows Into Nature,” I came up with a stained glass motif using colors from one of the photographs and one of the sculptures.

Hayward Arts Council Brochure

Hayward Arts Council Brochure

This 4–page 2–fold brochure advertised an “open studio” event where many artists in the Hayward, CA area opened their doors to the public. I chose a fun, bouncy feel as opposed to a serious tone to encourage people to take a chance, to do something different and fun!

LAPA T-Shirt Design

LAPA Band Camp T–Shirt Design

Here’s another design, done for the Livermore Academy of Performing Arts, using a staple or mine, complementary colors. I really like the musical staff flowing out of the sax and I thought that the musical notes incorporated into the “Band Camp” title was a great idea.

All Pro Sports Logo

All Pro Sports Business Correspondence

For this design, I applied a baseball superlative, “hitting it out of the park”, to this sports–related business. Very clean, very appropriate.
